We are a group of women from Central New York State. Our ages range from mid-20's to late-50's. Our dance is called American Tribal Style/Fusion Bellydance. This style traces its origins to the ritual dances of pre-Christian Judaic tribeswomen. Over the centuries, as trade routes became established, these dances picked up influences from the Far East to Scandinavia to North Africa. At some point, the dance seems to have disappeared, though many indigenous peoples kept some form of ritual dance alive through local cultural and/or religious customs.
During the 1980's, the dance emerged into the public consciousness again, most notably in San Francisco. Carolena Nerrichio, Director of Fat Chance Belly Dance, is largely credited for developing what came to be known as American Tribal Style Bellydance. Since then, this dance form has continued to evolve. There are as many variations on the original tribal style as one can imagine. The common thread uniting all of us, however, is empowerment of the feminine spirit!
We seek to convey a message of unity amongst all peoples, as well as to express what the dance means to us as individuals. We pray that our dance will light the fire of the higher self in each of us, as well as in those who are touched by our performances.
We extend our blessing to you all!
